Are you looking for trusted legal advice without the big firm price tag? Jargon-free legal solutions for entrepreneurs and employees

Do you really understand why some businesses succeed and others fail? Why is it some business owners seem to be forever fighting fires and others move from one success to another?

Every disaster that hits your business is like putting the brakes on your success. Now is the time to take the brakes off, for good.

Approachable Lawyer takes the brakes off your business

There is nothing new about the information on this website. It is all based upon the law and the law has evolved over centuries. The difference is the way it is presented - in a way that you can understand, that you can implement in your business, and in a way that you will actually enjoy reading!!

But law is boring, isn't it?

If you have read a legal article before (or worse still a legal opinion) the chances are that it would have bored you to sleep. That was the experience of most people before they found this website. The information on this site won't do that which is why hundreds of business owners subscribe to get the regular monthly articles.

I had only ever read one legal newsletter before subscribing to the Approachable Lawyer website and that sent me to sleep in an upright chair – and not even an airplane can do that to me! Let’s face it, law can be dry at the best of times but I enjoy reading the war stories on the Approachable Lawyer website, especially the ones that are of relevance to my business. I love the fact that they are written in a down to earth style and it is reassuring to know that I’m not the only one with the same issues. The best bit is that I get practical advice which helps me steer away from the problem rather than wait until I am knee deep in it and have to manage my way out. I am constantly referring the articles to people, particularly those clients that have the same issues as us. Sheryl Gavin, Managing Director, IT Maniacs Limited

The purpose of this website

I have been in the law for 12+ years and practised in two countries - the UK and New Zealand. No matter where you go, lawyers have the same reputation: unapproachable, expensive and difficult to communicate with. The purpose of this website is to break the mould and open up law to business owners and employees to give you a better chance of being successful either in your business or your chosen career.

So, if you have been googling the internet looking for solutions to your legal problems, then your search will end here. On this website you will find practical information which you can implement.

I thought all articles written by lawyers were long winded and hard to understand. What I liked about those on the Approachable Lawyer website was that they were easy to read whilst at the same time being informative. All of a sudden I realised that most legal matters could be explained clearly and concisely. That meant that I was able to apply the articles to our company. Getting them on a monthly basis and having them available on the website means I don’t have to waste time looking for information and they keep me up to date. I would recommend other business owners to subscribe since I have found them very informative and incredible value in making sure our company follows the correct protocols in all legal dealings. You'll look at law differently from now on

Instead of seeing law as a hindrance, this website will show you how you can use the law to grow your business without getting into trouble. All businesses get the speed wobbles occasionally but the information on this site will teach you how to take the brakes off safely. I call it shark-proofing because if your business is not robust enough to withstand the sharks in the commercial world, it won't grow.

I suggest you explore the various sections of this website, and ONLY THEN sign up for the newsletter. The newsletter is FREE but it is not a hastily put together document or a disguised sales pitch. You'll find the information fun to read, simple to implement and easy to understand.

In the past I have always needed a lawyer to explain a legal article in simple terms. However, the Approachable Lawyer articles are easy to read and even easier to understand. The information is always relevant and because of that I now keep a folder of all the information I receive rather than hitting the delete button. I have already recommended the articles to others. Keep up the good work! Taylor Hegotule

3 reasons you should subscribe

Reason 1: I stake my personal reputation on it - and I'm a practising barrister of 12+ years experience.

Reason 2: You can read 20+ testimonials for the articles and the newsletter. People before you have tested it and find it of great value.

Reason 3: Only some articles are open to public viewing. The rest are hidden from view. You'll get access to these articles when you subscribe. There's no password to remember and you can't find the hidden pages on your own. So without subscribing you miss out on valuable information.

With your subscription you also get two valuable reports as an added bonus

What the free reports are about

Employees can be your biggest asset or your biggest nightmare. Manage them right and your profits will soar. Manage them badly and your profits will take a skydive. So wouldn't you like to know The 10 Most Common Mistakes Made by NZ Employers (and how to avoid financial disaster)?

Ever been on the brink of clinching a deal but you've been worried that the other party may be a shark? As the name suggests, How to Seal the Deal (and prevent it falling apart) tells you how to seal that deal and prevent it going pear shaped later and leaving you in more trouble than you started. Both these reports are available as downloads when you subscribe.

When you subscribe you won't get spammed!

I hate spam and I know you do too. That's why I keep my emails to a minimum. Normally you will only get between 1-2 emails per month which will be relevant to your business. And if you later find that's too much for you, there is always an unsuscribe link at the bottom of all emails sent from this website.

And finally...

If you are one of those people, like me, who hates being bombarded with newsletters that don't really say anything of use, here is what one subscriber said about the Approachable Lawyer newsletter:

I ignore most newsletters, especially the email variety because they are not easy to read. Legal ones especially tend to have heavy legal talk. The Approachable Lawyer newsletters on the other hand are interesting, and have relevant content to my business. As soon as I subscribed I realised there was a lot I didn’t know – and that made me read them more carefully! I often circulate the articles amongst my own client database and without fail I always receive positive comments back. Ray Harding, OfficeProductsOnline.co.nz

So grab yourself a coffee because you may be on this website for some time reading the articles. To start taking the brakes off your business either go to the main article index or choose one of the specialist subjects which may be of particular interest to you:

Boring and over informative – that’s how I would sum up legal articles I have read in the past. I find the Approachable Lawyer articles, on then other hand, more of a tool for my business. They help me with running my business and you could even describe them as coaching me to do things right. Overall, I find them very informative and I like the use of examples which help me apply the principles to my business. I would recommend them to other business owners like me. Amar Singh, Esquires Coffee Houses, Ferry Building

I am involved with many other small business people who, like me, have little time as they do all of the administration of their business without too much specialist support. For that reason I wouldn’t normally read or recommend a legal article, but with the Approachable Lawyer articles I actually understand what I am reading. They allow me to pick up information easily that may be pertinent to my business and keep me up to date. It is like having a lawyer in my office! Jenny Bell

I wouldn’t normally consider looking at a law firm’s website, but I did subscribe to the Approachable Lawyer website to get the articles because I find them short, easy to understand and topical. Since I am on my own in the accounting and business advice area, it is a good source of information and pinpoints areas I need to deal with. Mike Wallace

Some articles written by lawyers leave you more confused at the end than when you started. They tend to be lectures rather than articles and they deal with small points of law without any advice at the end. Unlike those articles, the Approachable Lawyer articles are great. They are concise, make sense, and give advice worth having to small businesses who don't want to run to their lawyer (and pay lawyer's fees) every time they want something. Victoria Spackman, Business and Legal Affairs Manager, Gibson Group, Wellington.

In my experience, legal articles are difficult to read - they are usually written in a formal style, full of legal jargon and long unwieldy sentences. The Approachable Lawyer articles, on the other hand, come in an easy-to-read format and use realistic scenarios that most people can relate to. As a result, the articles provide enjoyable but informative reading which are easy to assimilate and easy to act upon. I nearly always know of someone who is grappling with the same employment issue and I usually forward these articles to at least one or two clients every time. Sarah Edmonds, PPS REcruitment, Auckland.
